Types of Anesthesia

The type of anesthesia is based on the type and extent of the procedure and your preference. During the initial or preoperative consult the patient will be explained the best options for their surgery and a decision regarding which type of anesthesia to you can be made together.

Local Anesthesia

Local Anesthesia is a direct infiltration of anesthetic agent into the site of surgery using a needle. This may cause intermittent discomfort for the patient throughout the procedure.

Sedation

Sedation: The patient is given medication through the vein to relieve anxiety and discomfort. The patient frequently sleeps through the procedure or may wake and talk after the painful portion of the procedure is completed. The patient breathes on their own.

General Anesthesia

General Anesthesia: The patient is asleep throughout the procedure and a breathing tube is placed to breath for the patient.

You must plan to have someone drive you home and spend the night with you if you have either Sedation or General Anesthesia
