Injectables Boston - Topicals Wellesley, MA
Not ready for a full facelift? Try a filler & Botox!
These do wonders temporizing the aging changes of the face. A person with isolated area of wrinkling is ideal for fillers. The most popular fillers are made of materials that will last for 4-24 months, ie: Restylane, Hylaform, Radiesse , fat grafts. Deep wrinkles and fine wrinkles are often best treated with different agents. Also, the addition of Botox to prevent the wrinkle from recurring is very beneficial. Some patients may have such extensive wrinkling that a dermabrasion, facelift, chemical peel or laser treatment will be beneficial. The risks of injection of any agent may be seen with correction of aging changes of the face with injectable agent, ie: hematoma, bruising, edema, discomfort, inflammation and erythema.
Patient variations in age, genetic background, skin quality and lifestyle, as well as the location of the site injected, result in differences in the degree to which the material will last, thus making the result slightly unpredictable. In general, most agents have a relatively predictable length of time that the defect will remain corrected.
The patient who is unclear as to the treatment desired will have time to discuss the issues and learn about the options so that an educated decision can be made in the initial consultation with the Dr.s O’Sullivan.
Cymetra
Micronized deep layer of skin which has been purified and reconstitued in lidocaine
Radiesse & Sculptra
These are long lasting injectables which maintain correction for at least 1.5- 2 years in most patients. Radiesse is a calcium hydroxyalpatite which is felt to stimulate the patient’s own collagen. Sculptra is a polylactic acid which is also found to increase skin thickness over time. The greatest risk is the development of palpable nodules in the skin in about 10% of individuals.
Collagen
Collagen is still an excellent filler but has the risk of an allergic reaction, therefore a skin test is required 1 month prior to treatment. Any sign of redness, itching, swelling or other occurrences at the test site would preclude the use of collagen containing products.
Risks not necessarily related to allergies include infection, abscesses, open sores, skin peeling, scarring and lumpiness, which may persist over the treated area. Reports of these problems are very rare.
Fat has the limitation of unpredictable survival with 40-60% potential loss. This requires multiple injections with over filling for each injection and unpredictable result and feel and risk of lumpiness.
